How Cheating Death Inspired Katie

Hi! Welcome to Dodge Probate. I’m Katie Bayliss – lawyer, real estate expert and successful entrepreneur; and founder of Dodge Probate. I am married to my law school sweetheart and together we have two precious children.

As you read my story, you will understand why I believe it is urgent for every family to protect themselves, their assets and their future. It is out of this story that Dodge Probate was born.

Before I became pregnant with my second child, I led three thriving businesses. I was young, healthy, and strong. I felt I had the ability to paint my dream life.

But as life would have it, my second pregnancy was anything but easy. By the second trimester, I had congestive heart and kidney failure, and experienced severe seizures. With my near-death experience, my family’s lives flashed before my eyes. I recall my will to stay alive. I thought about how my husband would become a widower with a toddler and a premature baby. This was not how I had imagined my life to be.

My daughter and I overcame every hurdle and complication before us. It was an incredibly challenging journey, drawing our family even closer. I am forever grateful for our family and friends who supported us and said countless prayers on our behalf. Through my experience, I developed greater personal strength, appreciation for life, and I deepened my spiritual belief.

Whether I am helping families make their American Dream of homeownership a reality; consulting businesses to secure their vision by ensuring legal compliance; or teaching individuals how to protect themselves and their family should they experience an unforeseen life altering event, I count my blessings everyday that I am able to do the type of work I do.

During that time of my second pregnancy, our family could have lost everything we worked for – our home, our businesses and every dollar we had in savings. We have worked hard to rebuild our family back up again. We now know that we must plan better and for the unexpected. Through the unfortunate turn of events, Dodge Probate was born. Developing solid estate plans for clients allows me to combine my love of creativity, my extensive knowledge of real estate and my strategic savvy know-how of the legal practice. Every trust, will and estate plan must be designed for each individual and family. Crafting the most comprehensive trust and estate plan requires an attorney to think differently, unconventionally and from new perspectives in our fast changing world.

I am confident Dodge Probate can become your trusted legal advisor. We will provide you with the best advice, help you make informed decisions, apply strategies to keep your money in your family – all while keeping your best interests at heart. I hope you will allow my team and I to be of service to you and your family.

Professional Background

I am licensed to practice law in the State of California. I began my legal career working for an Orange County wills and trusts law firm. I expanded and developed my legal expertise in business law, employment law and real estate law. I deeply appreciate the effort people make to provide for themselves and their families – building homes and businesses, and acquiring assets that may be passed on to their children and grandchildren.

I worked for US Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez of the 46th District of California on Capitol Hill. There I was exposed to law and gained a broad range of legal experience within the field of constitutional law and procedures.

Prior to attending law school, I worked at an industry leading financial investment manager in Newport Beach, California.

I am a proud member of the National Association of Professional Women. Additionally, I am a member of Wealth Counsel, an organization dedicated to helping estate planning attorneys provide their clients with the highest level of estate planning services and care.

I earned my Doctor of Jurisprudence from Western State College of Law in Orange County, California. There I achieved 5 Witkin Awards for Excellence for having the highest grade in my law school courses and was a member of the Dean’s Circle. I received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Irvine where I majored in Economics and minored in Business Management.

Orange County Business Journal (OCBJ) and UCI’s Chief Executive Roundtable recognized me as “one of Orange County’s most important and influential women business leaders.” I have been recognized and nominated by OCBJ for the following awards: Women in Business Award, Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award and Family Owned Business Award.

Home Life

My family and I call Orange County home. We enjoy nature, hiking, the arts, cooking and baking.  We love serving our community and spending time at our church. I am love all things beautiful. I am passionate about living life to the fullest everyday. Often times my love for life is what others say is most infectious about me.

After my husband passed away unexpectedly, I was left with his estate and it was a mess. I had to go through probate court to transfer his property into my name. The attorney was costly and the process made moving on take longer than I would have liked. I knew that I did not want my children or their guardians to experience what I went through so getting a trust and estate plan was on top of my to-do list. Katie and the team at Dodge Probate were very information, helpful, professional and easy to work with. Having an estate plan is a gift for your family.

I am thankful to have peace of mind knowing that my family will be taken care of. I own a business and if something were to happen to me, I want my wife to be able to care for our children and our business without the headache and stress of probate. I am grateful for the patience and compassion they showed me at Dodge Probate. This is a serious matter, yet it was so easy to talk to the team at Dodge Probate.

Dodge Probate was personable and caring. I had a “cookie cutter” will thinking that would be sufficient to protect myself, my family and my assets. I came to later find out that I actually needed a trust. I was referred to Katie and the Dodge Probate team by a neighbor. She made the process so easy and comfortable; and she always had my best interests at heart. I wish I knew of Katie sooner.

I do not have a family of my own yet. However, through working, I have accumulated some assets. I want my parents to have immediate access to my finances come death or disability; and if I were to become incapacitated, I want them to know my wishes. Also as a computer tech individual, I have digital accounts and assets that need to be made known. In today’s age, a paper trail may not exist for my parents to follow. Through the team at Dodge Probate, I now know that important bills will not go unpaid and valuable assets will not be overlooked. I no longer have to worry about precious memories and financials. Katie is organized, knowledgeable, and sincere. In the first few minutes you spend with her, it is evident that she is competent and confident.
